Opening an exchange account from Thailand is governed locally, not by the exchange's home page. The Bank of Thailand (BOT), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Ministry of Finance jointly reviewed digital assets and deem it necessary to regulate their usage as a means of payment for goods and services. A digital asset business operator must obtain a licence from the Minister of Finance on the SEC's recommendation, under Section 26 of the Emergency Decree on Digital Asset Businesses B.E. 2561 (2018); the SEC publishes the licensed exchange list. That decides which venues may take your registration, what identity checks you will face, and whether a platform advertising to you is actually permitted to serve you. The funding side is just as local: PromptPay, launched in 2016, is the national payment infrastructure: money transfers via citizen ID, mobile number or bank account number through digital channels with lower fees. Everything below is read from the regulator's own material or the platform's published terms, re-checked on 2026-08-31.
Thailand at a glance
The four things below decide whether an exchange account is usable for you here, and they are decided locally rather than by the platform. Who supervises the sector sets the rules a venue must meet before it may take your registration at all. The licensing regime tells you whether the platform you are looking at is inside that perimeter or merely accepting sign-ups from outside it. The funding rail decides how your money physically arrives and what it costs on the way in, which is a charge no exchange fee page lists. The tax line is what you owe afterwards regardless of which venue you chose. Each row links to the material it was read from on 2026-08-31. Thailand is the market this page covers.

What this means in practice
- Who is allowed to serve you
A digital asset business operator must obtain a licence from the Minister of Finance on the SEC's recommendation, under Section 26 of the Emergency Decree on Digital Asset Businesses B.E. 2561 (2018); the SEC publishes the licensed exchange list. A platform that is not covered by it may still accept your sign-up, but you would be outside the protection the regime is there to provide, and the recourse if something goes wrong is not the same.
- How money actually gets in
PromptPay, launched in 2016, is the national payment infrastructure: money transfers via citizen ID, mobile number or bank account number through digital channels with lower fees. The deposit rail is part of your cost: a transfer method with its own charge changes the real price of a trade before the exchange's fee is applied at all.
- What happens at tax time
Gains from transferring cryptocurrency or digital tokens (the portion exceeding cost) are assessable income with 15% personal-income-tax withholding under the 2018 Revenue Code amendment; VAT at 7% is exempted for transfers through licensed exchanges, brokers and dealers from 1 January 2024. Export your trade history from whichever venue you use while you still have access to it — platforms differ in how far back their exports reach, and reconstructing a year of activity after the fact costs far more than saving a file did.
